The bohemian Tunic - Man Choli

I have been busy traveling to Tantalizing Thailand and touring Bangkok, Pattaya and Krabi and have been very lazy off late - writing and updating my blog has been the last thing on my mind. Sorry, holidays are most important aspect of my life :)

There will be loads of juicy fashion fodder in the coming weeks as my sole purpose (and the soul purpose as well) is to write about the most shoppable and fashionable places on planet Earth - a shopping heaven for men - Bangkok, being one of them.

But before I start my fashion columbus series (apparently covering fashion capitals of the east and the west), I would like to shower my appreciation on the Indian Tunic - Man Choli as I call it owing to the cuts, contours and likeness :).

I call it bohemian because the tunic of sorts defies the conventional rules of masculinity and yet is so super masculine that it is a popular Indian traditional wear still worn in it's rustic avatar by Indian men (traditionally worn with a "dhoti" - a lower garment that can be wrapped around as a sarong - another Indian garment to have inspired fashion around the world!

The tunic worn by men is like a jacket or an upper garment usually worn as it is (that is nothing is worn inside except probably a vest) criss-crossed with cords like a corset and frock-ing it's way upto the waist :-

Picture -> train-srv.manipalu.com
This is a popular garment worn mostly by Rajasthani(India) men and has a strong resemblance to the traditionally styled Chinese jackets for men :-

Picture -> aliexpress.com

The man choli can serve several purposes - can be worn as a dinner jacket and even casually over your favorite pair of jeans. These can be worn comfortably in Summers and the coming summer of 2012 - Man Cholis aka Tunics will have a special unique appeal and so a must-have in any fashionable man's wardrobe. Make sure you invest in a cotton tunic like the one below -

The Anti-Aging Cream = Botox cream? + Men in the Beauty industry

Just the other day I was reading online about how Botox injections have become  passé and Botox creams that have been around for quite some time are suddenly the new craze about town!

Now, the obvious reference to Botox creams in this blogpost is because I had promised to tell the name of the anti-aging cream/s I have been using all this while. Fashion and beauty are synonymous like hand in glove.

Men are increasingly using cosmetic procedures and cosmetics.

Read my blogpost on Male cosmetics -

Male Cosmetics - fashion, fad or farce? And, a note on Skincare regime(Anti-Aging)

I'm still trying to understand what Botox cream is all about! To me a Botox cream is nothing but a Botox alternative in cream form i.e. necessarily not Botox (Botulinum toxin) but any cream that has a strong anti-aging ingredients that probably have the same positive effects on skin as Botox - namely, wrinkle smoothing.

I may also be wrong in assuming that there is actually a Botox alternative available in cream format. But it's my own perception that anti-aging creams are a much better bet than cosmetic or even laser procedures on skin unless desperately required.

My favs are organic and Ayurveda skin care products and I use this particular brand - Forest Essentials' that are natural and sans side effects for most skin types!

I don't use anything else on my skin as of now but I have tried anti-aging creams from  Clinique, L'occitane and Estee Lauder - 3 of my most preferred brands.

To me, an anti-aging cream will always be my first and the last choice! Primarily because of the positives involved -

1.It's an application so doesn't need to be injected and hence less procedural and not painful!
2.It could be more long lasting (both in terms of financials and practicality) than Botox
3.No plasticity, stiffness and possibly fewer side effects!

I know I may sound terribly biased since Botox has been around for more than a decade and I am completely writing off a celebrity endorsed cosmetic lift-procedure that is famous the world over!

But that's me. I am a safe player especially in the matters of the skin department!

I don't think I'd be using doing Botox anytime soon but would prefer using a Botox Cream anyday!

New anti-wrinkle cream will trick human cells into regenerating themselves

I have tried several and I don't want to compare beauty brands because tomorrow they might just come up with something better and I might actually be endorsing it!

The beauty brands that I have tested on my skin are Lancome, Clinique, Estee Lauder and L'occitane in the recent past to Garnier and L'oreal in the distant past.

Of these I can only swear by are - Clinique, L'occitane and Estee Lauder.

Forest Essentials will remain my hot fav for now.

Yes, the products for men and women may differ as there are different skin products for different skin types(oily, dry, combination or normal). But, it's absurd to have classification as per one's gender!

Men increasingly using cosmetic products isn't news, but growing number of men looking for a career in the beauty industry is interesting. Read more in this article -

A Goan rhapsody - Anjuna Flea market

I had an amazing experience yesterday at the famed Goan beach flea market at the tip of Anjuna beach accompanied with the usual mix of fun, eating and shopping!

Flea Market is the kind of place where usually I go to update my bargaining skills! I love to haggle with vendors selling rip offs of famous in-the-trend couture and high street brands - totally inexpensive and yet so must-wear!

While lot of tourists come to get great bargains on clothing, accessories and souvenirs, the fun is actually in seeing the crowd! From uber-cool hippies, to some daring darlings who roam around practically nude, to people clothed from head to toe in colorful bohemian attire!

To top that you have live bands and a breath-taking beach side/ coast-line view!

Where else can you have Vada Pav(more like traditional Indian delicacy) eateries, Japanese Sushi and Brit Banana Pies on display in one row.. run by both Indian and foreign vendors and vagabonds wanting to make a quick buck!

Case in point: An electric mix worth seeing. You would never see such an awesome amalgamation - a natural rhyming of west and the east!

The best in the lot -

A Flea Market with tons of consciousness! - A lot of stalls as part of a Social(Child Relief) and green cause(Eco-Fashion) form an integral part of the shopping experience. Infact, I was amazed that these stalls had more customers walking in! A positive sign!

This time around, I wanted to support a social cause initiated by International Animal Rescue (IAR), a non-profit organisation that is active around the globe and especially in Goa. I bought IAR T-Shirts for the whole family and donated a sizable chunk of my shopping budget to the welfare of the animal kingdom :)

Next time, I would be supporting the LGBT stall that sell amazing LGBT-themed bags, clothes, accessories etc.

Yup, I also bought some nice t-shirts with God (Hindu deities) imprints (that incidentally have been controversial). God imprints have been my favorites for a long time and these 2 t-shirts are beyond fascinating! Just look at them here. Divinity! -

Mention flea market, and Goa's famed Saturday Night Bazaar cannot be ignored! Perhaps the most happening flea market/ weekend market/ night bazaar in the world, in case you are in Goa in season, you should never miss out on this extravagance.

The highlight is the sheer vibrancy of this place! Buzzing with musical performances (drums, flutes, guitar et al!), sing along sessions with amazing musicians from across continents who seem to have perfected some memorable numbers of Eric Clapton, The Carpenters, The Abba and the latest pop music on billboards!

The expat stalls selling anything from Japanese to Spanish, Mexican to African - awesome deals and awesome bargaining, cultural mix, eating and limitless drinking makes the Saturday Night Bazaar in Goa my favorite hot spot every Saturday evening and night!

Sorry, my camera's battery got conked off :( So there aren't any more pictures for you to see but I believe my enthusiasm is enough for you to gauge how exciting the night bazaar is!

Also Visit Goa for it's serenity, laidback charm; prawn curry and rice, beaches that aren't virginal but still good to go!

2012 Resolutions + The ABCDs of fashion!

I heard someone saying this (maybe quoting from some style book, but I don’t remember who said this) that a man who needs to make the right impression needs to know his ABCD –
A – Attitude
B - Behavior
C – Communication and
D – Dressing sense
If these 4 qualities, traits, factors or whatever you may call these faculties are in a man’s grasp, he will surely make an impression in any situation, place or time!
Today, men are spoilt of choices. There is so much about Men’s fashion from blogs, magazines, journals (both offline and online) to websites!
And men are getting only more confused than ever before.
Everyone seems to be giving fashion advice from a self-styled blogger to men’s fashion magazines to online retailing/ e-tailing websites!
Their ultimate goal is obvious – to sell! Sell brands that pay them for advertising and marketing.
The problem is not in how marketing dynamics are being played upon; capturing the social media to an extent of choking it to near death – the problem is that all this is leading to loss of credibility!
People are questioning the motives behind the fashion advocacy that is slowly transitioning into mediocrity.
Frankly, men out there are no longer willing to waste time on fancy editorials, and lavish colorful spreads –irrelevant, impractical and useless to the everyday man!
I have been speaking to lot of men and interestingly most men are keen to know the practical side of fashion versus over-the-top storytelling that they seem to have grown out of!
They don't bother anymore about "Wear this" or "Wear that" unless it makes practical sense!
Should they invest their time to - read advice or well-worded editorials; put in effort to shop and endorse a brand or a style just because someone is telling them it's all worth it??????

Men are looking to create a fashion statement. True. But, a statement that has a whole lot of substance in it!
Why then do I write about fashion?
Well, blogging/ writing to me is a medium of self-expression.
In my constant pursuit of self-improvement from being fashion clumsy to being fashion conscious- blogging has helped me to keep myself updated on what real fashion is, and with that insight and knowledge I gather ferociously and disseminate, I am able to share my understanding of fashion with other men who may be as clueless as I was about fashion, style and trends or the ABCDs as I mentioned above.
What I’m trying to achieve is simple -To comprehend the incomprehensible and make sense of the senseless!

I write about what I wear, I use and I fancy! Period.

It’s not a sign of insecurity to ascertain and assess your fashion quotient. And, it’s never too late to change it.
In today’s competitive world, it’s literally the survival of the fittest. Fittest means, well-rounded personality with a high dose of individuality (i.e. Style)!
See around you. People are increasingly becoming conscious, self-aware and decisive about the choices they make for themselves – self-analyzing!
If you feel it’s time for you to change and become the new you, there is never a better time than NOW!
2012 is just around the corner and you can start making your list of New Year resolutions.
Work on your ABCDs and you would never have to comprehend anything in print or pictures that incite you to make wrong choices for yourself forever depending on outside perceptions.
Be +ve, Be confident!

cheers!

Return of the Underdogs - Fashion Trend Forecast 2012 + Men's 2012 Hairstyles

I know this sounds more like a movie title. Something like the Return of the Jedi :) from the Star Wars trilogy, but instead this is about those fashion staples that are making a comeback of sorts (although, they were just about there till now).

Don't know about the 2012 trends yet? Fret not thyself! Trend analysis is no rocket science. Fashion is cyclic and is also socially determined (as suggested by the economist George Taylor) .

For starters understand this "what goes around...comes around" So no need to go through all the fashion memorabilia, countless fashion weeks around the world or be literally glued to Fashion TV just to get an idea about what you are going to be wearing this season!

Leave the hard work of this sort to people like us who kind of serve as an inspiration to designers and sometimes dictate runway – couture and prêt-à-porter trends and even influence fashion cycles sometimes ushering in a trend much earlier than expected!

Don't believe me?Okay, you may find it surprising but one of the most read post in my blog is ->

The Big Pockets Trend

Sometime back, I predicted how the Big Pockets would make a comeback of sorts.

You see the trends in the coming months and you shall see a lot of Big Pockets around!

If you know the basics, then you don't need to know much except what is in right now!

If trends are anything to go by, then 2012 will usher in the fol. in a big way! Keep your eyes open for them - especially for Summer 2012 :-

Colors - Big, bright, bold hues in Graphic, Bold prints; bohemian and psychedelic are making a comeback! Ochre to more mustard, tangerine and purple, Bottle green would become the colors of the season. Lookout for statement shirts this season in colors galore!

Polka Dots - I don’t know about the yellow bikini ("Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini")but polka dots will be back with a bang.

Black Homme Contrast Polka Dot Shirt - Pic - stylehive.com

Belts with Trademark/ Logo Buckles - The belts had become more slender off late. Buckles even more subtle and small width. Well Big is in not just in pockets anymore! Big Logo/ Trademark buckles will be hot in 2012 in both leather and canvas even if it yells "Show off" - But, What the F**K! It's like owning a signature belt. The bigger the label - Gucci/ Hermes/LV so on..the Better :)! Invest in genuine designer belt and not a cheap roadside copy. The original version is not just classier but an investment you make for the sake of fashion!

HERMES H Letter golden Buckle Belt, Pic -> anybelts.com

Colored Patterned-Trousers - I absolutely adore colored patterned trousers especially like the ones Ann Demeulemeester designs.

Checkout her 'Abstrait' trousers below available @ Far Fetch.com

Floral Patterns - Floral prints were alomost out but since colors are in, in such a big way, can flowers be far behind?

Toledo bold floral print shirt, Pic -> stylecompare.co.uk

Multi-Pleated look - Pleats always look classic and 2012 will boast of multi-pleated look in shirts and trousers! More (pleats) the trendier!

Checkout Ann Demeulemeester's Pleated Trouser below available @ Barneys New York

Pleated Trouser with front button slash pockets, rear button welt pockets and slits at cuff

Street Style - Well, people can't seem to get enough of their brand cravings but not in 2012. Something tells me it's not just the recession, Streets style shall rule the roost! Happy saving!

You may want to read my post -> Is Crass the new Class

The elongated look in shoes (the pinocchio look) - Another Big trend? Yes. Elongated shoes would be in and how! Not Square but Lonnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggg. Size does matter ;)

Leather calfskin men's dress lace-up elongated formal shoes, Pic -> KeeLook.com

Waistcoats - No longer the poor country cousin hidden well beneath the layers and serving as the side-kick to the super coat - Waist coats worn out as a jacket are just as cool and in!

Men's Waistcoat, Pic -> tweed-jacket.com

The Dalmation Print and a dash of black & white -> Move over Leopard/ tiger print..The Dalmation print and yin & yang i.e. black & white will be even more pronounced in 2012 and you shall see glimpses of it here and there from underwears to ties and pocket squares, obviously, along with a rainbow of colors!

Something Interesting! Weather, Spill/ Stain-proof clothing will be another big hit coming year! We shall call it practical fashion. Another trend where practical fabric choices would rule the fashion world.

Your wardrobe's Couture Trash and Do guys use Wardrobe/ Style Management apps?

So your wardrobe closet is all cleaned up, organized and your favorite pieces of sartorial excellence and also not so important ones are all neatly stacked up! Or, it could be just the opposite. Men aren't the usual wardrobe managers and they also aren’t overwhelmingly dirty pigs as they are made out to be! But, when it comes to having a load of couture trash in their wardrobes, both men and women have something in common!

Pic -> wardrobeadvice.com
Couture Trash could refer to several things.

Several things could refer to designer clothes or accessories that you don’t wear anymore – maybe they seem too outrageous or ridiculous to wear out! Or, maybe your avant-garde clothing pieces aren’t true reflection of your personality and style. Or, you have grown too big to fit into them (which is quite a pity I tell you!).Or just maybe, you are too tired of wearing black and blues and your wardrobe seems to conspicuously have only these 2 colors in abundance!

I have a friend who until recently (till I intervened and put some fashion sense into him) would only buy expensive designer shirts of the same fit, style and detailing across brands in the same color – White! His problem was simply put – Monotony!

Then again, I know a lot of people who have wardrobes stashed with winter clothing while they actually need only a few pieces of winter fashion to last maximum of 2 months. Especially, in tropical countires where Winter is barely touch and go (and mostly hardly ever there), It just doesn't sound sensible to have a wardrobe full of winter clothes!!

To have a wardrobe full of a dominant season of your place of residence makes a whole lot of sense unless you travel frequently to regions that makes you investing in a seasonal wardrobe worthwhile!

If you find yourself forever complaining that you don’t have anything good in your wardrobe to wear to your office, or a party or a social do, and you are forever looking for an opportunity to add some more trash in your closet... It’s time to wake up to Couture Trash!

We often make hasty buys at times. Sometimes in the influence of mind-altering-wine decisions – when we just need to buy something as a habitual shopaholic - mindless shopping to get some sort of personal gratification.

Or, maybe see a model or a celebrity donning something nice in a glossy magazine and think how that something nice would actually look good on us!

But, life has anything but practical and expected outcomes! Otherwise, we wouldn’t have couture trash!

If you are sure you have couture trash in your wardrobe, then here are some simple steps to tackle getting rid of it with a well laid out action plan-

Charity begins at home – You may not want to throw your designer wear in the garbage bin but do consider it giving it to the less fortunate! Yeah, also remember, charity begins at home.

Exchange / Swap– Ever thought of exchanging your couture trash with your best pal? Exchange clothes for clothes, accessories for accessories or simply just have a healthy male bonding session and let your buddy treat you to beer-binge pint or even some live sports event like a game of Baseball or Cricket etc. etc.! You know right? One’s man’s trash can be others man’s gold :)

Sell online - eBay or ASOS Marketplace and so many more – E-commerce has definitely given us a reason to smile. You can put up a virtual sale and sell/ auction your stuff online and make some money out of it! Invest in gold or real estate instead!

Recycle – You probably don’t realize how well a worthless expensive piece of couture can be transformed and recycled into something more useable and wearable!
Recycling in simple terminology is transformation.  You don’t need to be too creative to think out of the box in matters of recycling couture trash. Use professional services like your neighborhood tailor shop for instance; Google; Ask you fashion-conscious friends etc.

Possibilities are endless here - your expensive pocket square can be altered into a cummerbund or can be worn as a scarf.

A favorite piece of priceless shirt can be re-designed. Ever heard of patches? Patches like patterned (tartans/ plaid, seersucker) can be stitched onto your shirt (by a tailor ofcourse) and can completely transform into a new statement piece!

Try this!

Yup, coming to wardrobe management software. I have heard, tried a lot of apps out there and frankly I can’t see myself using them. I duly download, do the basic trial and error; learn.
Then stop and move on to something else that catches my fancy!

I don’t really care about using technology to manage my wardrobe or style, help me try out clothes on a virtual model or even have a virtual closet and then have patience to see how well or not will it look good on me.

I guess wardrobe and style management apps are more popular with women.

Updated on 21st December -> An exception to the above statement - An ingenious app, I can guarantee more men will be using this one than women, read more @ -

La-Di-Dah - An X-Ray App that bares all!

I think my goofiness about apps resonates well with lot of guys who would rather use technology for much more useful aspects that the brilliant Internet has to offer (just like the X-ray App ;))!
