A Goan rhapsody - Anjuna Flea market

I had an amazing experience yesterday at the famed Goan beach flea market at the tip of Anjuna beach accompanied with the usual mix of fun, eating and shopping!

Flea Market is the kind of place where usually I go to update my bargaining skills! I love to haggle with vendors selling rip offs of famous in-the-trend couture and high street brands - totally inexpensive and yet so must-wear!

While lot of tourists come to get great bargains on clothing, accessories and souvenirs, the fun is actually in seeing the crowd! From uber-cool hippies, to some daring darlings who roam around practically nude, to people clothed from head to toe in colorful bohemian attire!

To top that you have live bands and a breath-taking beach side/ coast-line view!

Where else can you have Vada Pav(more like traditional Indian delicacy) eateries, Japanese Sushi and Brit Banana Pies on display in one row.. run by both Indian and foreign vendors and vagabonds wanting to make a quick buck!

Case in point: An electric mix worth seeing. You would never see such an awesome amalgamation - a natural rhyming of west and the east!

The best in the lot -

A Flea Market with tons of consciousness! - A lot of stalls as part of a Social(Child Relief) and green cause(Eco-Fashion) form an integral part of the shopping experience. Infact, I was amazed that these stalls had more customers walking in! A positive sign!

This time around, I wanted to support a social cause initiated by International Animal Rescue (IAR), a non-profit organisation that is active around the globe and especially in Goa. I bought IAR T-Shirts for the whole family and donated a sizable chunk of my shopping budget to the welfare of the animal kingdom :)

Next time, I would be supporting the LGBT stall that sell amazing LGBT-themed bags, clothes, accessories etc.

Yup, I also bought some nice t-shirts with God (Hindu deities) imprints (that incidentally have been controversial). God imprints have been my favorites for a long time and these 2 t-shirts are beyond fascinating! Just look at them here. Divinity! -

Mention flea market, and Goa's famed Saturday Night Bazaar cannot be ignored! Perhaps the most happening flea market/ weekend market/ night bazaar in the world, in case you are in Goa in season, you should never miss out on this extravagance.

The highlight is the sheer vibrancy of this place! Buzzing with musical performances (drums, flutes, guitar et al!), sing along sessions with amazing musicians from across continents who seem to have perfected some memorable numbers of Eric Clapton, The Carpenters, The Abba and the latest pop music on billboards!

The expat stalls selling anything from Japanese to Spanish, Mexican to African - awesome deals and awesome bargaining, cultural mix, eating and limitless drinking makes the Saturday Night Bazaar in Goa my favorite hot spot every Saturday evening and night!

Sorry, my camera's battery got conked off :( So there aren't any more pictures for you to see but I believe my enthusiasm is enough for you to gauge how exciting the night bazaar is!

Also Visit Goa for it's serenity, laidback charm; prawn curry and rice, beaches that aren't virginal but still good to go!

  1. I've been going to the flea market for a couple of years now but have noticed that the best clothes and shoes can be found in the stalls run by europeans and japanese who get some really cool and off beat designs. Of course, they're very pricey compared to the other options but worth it!
